For months, our six finalists have waited patiently for the Fashion Frenzy 2014 Live Stage Competition at the Intercoiffure Fall Atelier. The competition weekend has been designed as a fusion of both technical training, personal development and mentoring.
After arriving at the famed Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, our finalists met Luis Alvarez, Aquage cofounder and celebrated photographer, for dinner at Cipriani Dolci in Grand Central Station. Luis takes his photography very seriously and jumped up on a chair to get the perfect group shot.
Finalist, Jessica DeAngelo, presented Luis Alvarez with this question: “ What is the one piece of advice you wish you could have given yourself as a young stylist?”
Luis explained the idea of the 10,000 hour rule outlined in the book, Outliers, by Malcolm Gladwell. Saying it takes roughly ten thousand hours of practice to achieve mastery in a field. He advised her to not just go to shows and classes but to get her mannequin head out and really practice the basics.
After an incredible italian meal, Luis turned tour guide and away we went. The Campbell Apartment provided just the right amount of New York charm and Old World style.
A quick stop by the magazine shop turned into a lesson in editorial styling, finding inspiration and building a photo shoot concept. Every moment is teachable when you have 6 students thirsty for knowledge and a mentor so willing to share.
A quick peek at the stage provided our finalists with a surreal moment. If they weren’t nervous before, you can bet they were feeling the pressure now! We bid Luis and his incredible Aquage team (Nicole Gary, Ivan Betancourt & Don Wismer) goodnight and began preparing for what will surely be a life changing weekend.
